Songs About Online Dating

Craigslistlieder by Gabriel Kahane

Singer, songwriter and pianist, Gabriel Kahane was inspired by Craigslist, the online classifieds listings, when writing the lyrics for his collection dubbed, "Craigslistlieder."

Since the beginning of time, artist have sung about love, but now that millions of people are relying on the web for dating, it's logical that modern songs are beginning to sing about this experience.

The New York Times mentioned Kahane would be performing this week at the Houston Grand Opera. I hadn't heard of Craigslistlieder before and was intrigued. The songs debuted on his 2006 album, and were inspired by real postings on Craigslist. The 26 year old from Venice, California sings in a blues meets indie tone. His album, Walking Way From Winter, includes Craigslistlieder: I. You Looked Sexy, II. I'm Sorry, III. Half a Box of Condoms and IV. Neurotic and Lonely. Lieder, for those who don't know, is German for "song," not to be mixed up with Leder in Lederhosen, which means leather.

It's hilariously creepy, with a touch of Opera and a lot of drama. "Neurotic and Lonely," for example makes fun of the personals and dating section of the classified. In a deep, musical tone, he belts "Neurotic and lonely, average height, brown eyes, slightly disproportionate... brown curly hair, Jew, fro, 20 years old, 20 years old," he continues, "Slightly hunched, occasionally employed," and goes through a list of other attributes including, "Currently living with parents."
