Anthropic Cowork is a new desktop feature that allows Claude to autonomously perform file-based tasks within a user-approved folder on macOS. Anthropic Cowork lets users issue natural-language instructions for actions such as organizing documents, summarizing files, generating spreadsheets, renaming folders, and compiling reports from scattered materials. The system operates within a restricted directory chosen by the user and executes tasks step by step, showing progress as actions are completed. Claude can read, create, and edit files without requiring command-line input or scripting knowledge.
The feature is integrated into the Claude Desktop app and is built on the same agentic framework used in Anthropic’s developer-focused tools. Cowork supports common file formats including text documents, PDFs, images, and spreadsheets. Tasks are planned internally before execution, allowing sequential operations such as sorting, extracting data, and generating new files. The feature is currently available as a research preview for Claude Max subscribers on macOS systems.
