Cosmo Power “Noah” Designed to Protect from Natural Disasters

While it may look a little futuristic, the Noah by Cosmo Power is no concept. This disaster pod, which floats on water, is already being sold to individuals in Japan concerned about their safety should another Tsunami strike.

Japanese engineering company Cosmo Power launched the yellow pod four years ago, however, it was relatively undiscovered until after the March 2011 tsunami when thousands of lives were lost. Now it's a desirable item -- the company has received over 600 orders -- for individuals looking for an innovative way to protect themselves and their families.

"The more people know about it, the more they will be able to obtain this product according to their needs," Cosmo Power President Shoji Tanaka told the Associated Press. "This is the only shelter that guarantees protection from any natural disaster."

Each each Noah pod fits four adults and has a small window and breathing hole, and comes at a cost of JPY 300,000, or about $4,000 U.S.
