Awol Erizku’s Newest Exhibition Has Space, Basketball, and Hip Hop

Ethiopian-American artist Awol Erizku has a new solo cosmic-themed art exhibition showcasing his latest artworks. The exhibition features themes of the artist's daily life NASA, basketball culture, and hip-hop culture. The exhibition also features unique visual narratives that discuss issues of race, identity, and politics, with a special music mixtape being played.

One of the artworks displayed in the exhibition is an industrial aluminum surface that combines photographic images of outer space from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in 35 mm format with a physical basketball hoop attached. Another artwork featured in the exhibition is called the Head Crack (Stack or Starve), which is a totemic sculpture of three dices that are each made of black granite, verde malachite marble, and a red jasper gemstone from Madagascar. The color choices for the three dices are selected as it represents the Pan-African flag. The exhibition is being shown at the Ben Brown Fine Arts in London.
