Convertible Chair Shelves

Power Chair

This is a piece of furniture that can be three different things, a series of chairs for a family of four whose members are of neatly descending height, a nifty shelving unit with built in coat rack or just an arty jumble of wooden puzzle pieces!

Guillaume Drapier, a designer at the Royal College of Art in London (UK) calls his American oak chair a powerchair because, “Without resistance, no power is possible”. The line is taken from a quotation by Michel Foucault that Drapier added to his website. You can see why: his set of chairs all rely on each other to stay together as chairs. They can be arranged leaning against each other forming a short staircase made of chairs as each is of a different height. Or they can be stacked one on top of the other to form a clever multi-shelved cupboard with a coat rack formed from the upright portions of each chair. Fun and functional art furniture for a foyer.
