Futuristic Windshield Displays

The Continental AR-HUD System Displays Information on Windshields

A variety of heads-up windshield displays have been developed in recent years, but the Continental Augmented Reality Heads-Up Display or Continental AR-HUD takes things to the next level by displaying information 'on the road'. The system can superimpose information on the road where it's most relevant, such as the distance to the car in front, when to make a turn or even upcoming driving conditions.

The Continental AR-HUD takes data from the vehicle's camera and radar and combines it with digital maps and GPS information to create a model of the external view of the car as seen from the driver's point of view.

The system displays full-color graphics on the road view in a 130 cm by 60 cm high section of the driver's field of vision. The system places navigation symbols such as turns directly on drivers' field of vision so they don't have to turn away to consult a GPS device.
Trend Themes
1. Windshield Display Advancements - Continued development of heads-up windshield displays, such as Continental's AR-HUD, will lead to even more sophisticated and useful information being displayed directly on the road.
2. Integrating Digital and Analog Information - The integration of data from various sources, such as vehicle cameras and GPS information, with digital maps and real-life road conditions, presents ample opportunities to seamlessly merge digital and analog information for drivers.
3. Improved Navigation Systems - The ability to display navigation information directly on the road view without the need for a separate GPS device presents opportunities for improved and more efficient navigation systems.
Industry Implications
1. Automotive - Continued advancements in windshield display technology could disrupt the automotive industry by transforming the driving experience and giving companies a competitive edge.
2. Augmented Reality - The Continental AR-HUD system, and other similar systems, could disrupt the augmented reality industry by expanding the potential applications of AR beyond entertainment and into practical uses like driving.
3. GPS Navigation - The integration of GPS information with heads-up displays could disrupt the GPS navigation industry by eliminating the need for separate devices and creating more efficient and safer navigation systems.
