This Contact Lens Design Shows Promise to Monitor Health

Wearable technology is becoming more popular, but the work is showing no sign of slowing down as apparent with this contact lens design that packs a number of innovative features. Created by researchers at the University of South Australia's Future Industries Institute (FII), the contact lens would enable users to have their health monitored directly from the device.

The team previously worked on a thin film coating that was targeted at the automotive industry to create smart windows and other connected accoutrements. The expansion by the team into the healthcare research sector with this contact lens design shows promise for those suffering with long-term ailments.

Explaining the technology, associate professor Drew Evans details the functionality and possibilities the technology holds: "The fluids in the eye provide markers of a person's health, so our goal now is to build electrical sensors on a contact lens from our polymers to sense in real time a person's well-being. The next big leap is to develop complementary technologies to read the information transmitted by the conducting polymers."
