Sydney-based architecture practice Common Office has completed Ramsgate House — a four-storey permanent residence adjacent to Bondi Beach that reinterprets the classical loggia as both a formal and spatial device to balance domestic privacy with its public surroundings for a young family.
The Ramsgate House's design introduces a series of arches along the primary facade, formed naturally through traditional double and triple-skin brick masonry. This operates as load-bearing structural elements that frame views, light, and quiet moments of occupation while mediating visibility between the house and the public realm of North Bondi. The classical loggia functions as an intermediate condition that offers shade and spatial depth while addressing the climatic demands of the coastal setting.
For this project, Common Office draws reference from the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana and the loggia's history as an architectural tool from classical antiquity to modernism.
