Amorphous Human Portraits

Cognition by Bence Bakonyi Delves Deep into the Soul

The photo series titled Cognition by Bence Bakonyi abstractly depicts a person's cognitive state with themselves and in the world. A poetic series, the human body appears to be enveloped by a black void. Nevertheless, this black void is as much part of the human spirit as their physical form. Instead of creating tension with it, the Shanghai-based photographer depicts a powerful sense of harmony that radiates beyond the darkness.

In addition to focusing on "self-cognition. confession, honesty," as the photographer writes, Cognition by Bence Bakonyi is also about human relations, which is at the center of all things. He elaborates, "I want to show conceptually a personal statement: myself in unity with an amorphous object, creating something whole and complete." He accomplishes this through five poetic images.
