Architecture and design firm Studio505 designed the 'Lotus Building,' a civic landmark located in the People's Park in Wujin, China. The structure is intended to represent cultural significance, as well as illustrate the local government's future commitments.
The architects designed an extension to an existing double-storey facility. The building's physical form -- the lotus shape -- was borne out of a need to ensure the structure had an original presence. The architects explain, "The development, ultimately, seeks to generate participation, to build an ownership of place that builds ties to the community and entices its people to stay and flourish and not to be drawn away."
The structure, which appears to be emerging from the lake, is entered from underneath. Visitors are then enveloped in a cathedral-like space with a luminescent atmosphere.
