The Ch'en Tsu-chang Artwork is Made of Miniature Materials

These miniature sculptures by Chinese artist Ch'en Tsu-chang are made of tiny olive pits. The natural materials are only 16 millimeters in height and 34 millimeters in length, dimensions that speak to Tsu-chang's immense talents and ability to craft exceptional art from even the tiniest mediums.

Images of sailors and small boats deliberately reflect poet Su Shih's Latter Ode on the Red Cliff. The story describes a journey along waters, giving way to Tsu-chang's depiction of passengers and the small canoe-like structures.

In addition to his exceptional configuration of men, women and the vessels, Tsu-chang also engraved Shih's poem along the bottom of the ships. This displays just how much the artist could do with so little space.
