Gadget-Charging Lamps

Mayela Mujica's Lamp Only Turns on When in Use

This wireless charging lamp was created by Mayela Mujica, a graduate student who is currently working towards her MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. Wireless device charging systems and furniture are now slowly coming together, but this wireless charging lamp approaches the merger differently—the lamp only functions when two smartphone devices have been placed on its base. As Mujica puts it, this gesture creates a "soft light [to] facilitate uninterrupted conversation."

More than just a lamp, this device is a reminder to pause and take a break to recharge yourself with a break from technology.

IKEA and Apple have already made moves to create furniture pieces and devices that facilitate wireless charging, but this student-designed charging lamp approaches the idea in a thoughtful way that considers how humans interact with objects.
