The Chain of Book Lovers event that took place on a cold Saturday in Riga, Latvia, involved around 15,000. Each person had a hand in transferring the tombs from the old National Library to the newly-built National Library across the river, literally. People formed a long chain between the old and new libraries and manually passed down the books from one end to the other.
Not only did the Chain of Book Lovers event create a beautiful sense of community, it also paid tribute to The Baltic Way, a 1989 demonstration that involved two million people joining hands across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The event was organized by Aiva Rozenberga. She says, "The people taking part in the book chain who are prepared to stand here on a cold winter day are taking this seriously too--we are literally standing up for culture."
