Illuminated Curved Home Extensions

Circle Studio Architects designs the Cereus House blends heritage with luminous curved additions atop a 1915 Edwardian cottage in Melbourne’s Seddon suburb. The project introduces two soft, white-curved volumes, rising above the original weatherboard, bringing natural light, volume, and visual flow into living spaces. These sculptural forms, supported by exposed curved rafters, contrast with the traditional roofline and guide daylight into the kitchen and deck while framing the north-facing backyard.

Heritage preservation sits at the heart of Cereus House. The existing structure was fully stripped, insulated, double-glazed, and reinforced with a concrete slab poured within its footprint. Passive design elements like shaded balconies and strategic cross-ventilation ensure thermal comfort, while warm timber finishes, clerestory glazing, and curved ceilings tie old and new together, proving that a century-old home can achieve modern performance without sacrificing character
