These Ceramic Baskets Stitch Together the Pottery Arts and Weaving Techniques

This notion of a ceramic basket might otherwise conjure imagery of wicker-imitating pottery, but this project presents a truly literal mash up of media. Eneida Tavares creates one-of-a-kind earthenware vessels that are roughly half comprised of bound pine needles.

In her Caruma series, the artist exercises her talent for doing traditional Angolan basket weaving with tree sprigs from Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. The handmade porcelain-like vases are thrown with rather rational forms, making the pairings with the asymmetric baskets so organic and intriguing. The two parts are brought together with thread that runs through holes in the fired clay.

What you see here is a truly creative combination of natural materials, coming together to produce a highly contemporary collection of products that intrigue and delight design-minded consumers.
