Rattle-Free Mountain Bicycles

The Cavalerie Bikes Feature a Belt Drive Instead of Regular Chains

French bicycle maker Cavalerie is launching its line of full-suspension mountain bikes in North America. These mountain bikes have a Gates Carbon belt drive and Effigear gearbox in place of the dirty, noise chains and greasy rear dereailleurs commonly seen in most regular mountain bikes.

The Gates Carbon belt drive is much smoother and quieter than regular chains and doesn't require regular lubrication, cleaning and other maintenance. It cannot be used with regular derailleurs but works well in conjunction with the Effigear gearbox.

There will be three models of Cavalerie bikes -- the Falcon downhill bike (with either a six- or seven-speed gearbox), Squirrel freeride (with nine speeds) and the Anakine enduro. The Falcon downhill and Squirrel freeride mountain bikes have been made available to American and Canadian buyers for $5,750, while the Anakine enduro is yet to be released.
