Free performances are rarer than they ought to be, but the CasArts Theater will make such events recurrent in Morocco. This ultramodern building is the winning entry in an architectural competition to liven up Casablanca's institutional square. Modeled on the haphazard massing of the medina neighborhood, this structure is composed of large geometric entities that cluster together to form an enormous interior program.
The 1,800-seat concert hall is located in one half of Christian de Portzamparc's CasArts Theater, but that isn't the only entertainment space. The front facade of the edifice can open up to produce a large stage, inviting the public to gather in the plaza as an audience for all sorts of shows. Even with just its indoor plan considered, this project will become the largest theatrical venue in Africa.
