Trailblazing City-Center Farming Towers

Carlo Ratti Has Designed the World's First 'Farmscraper'

Dubbed the "world's first farmscraper," Carlo Ratti Associati has unveiled its latest building design. The upcoming Jian Mu Tower will be built in Shenzen, China, and will consist of a 218-meter-high, 51-story large-scale farming tower. The tower will be equipped with farming technologies to produce enough crops to feed 40,000 people each year. In addition, it will also be equipped with office spaces, a food court, and a supermarket.

Carlo Ratti Associati's design won the international competition organized by the supermarket chain Wumart. The name for the tower is derived from the ancient Chinese folklore symbol of the "jian mu tree," which symbolizes a connection between heaven and earth. The designers echoed this mythical symbol in their architectural design.
