The Breathing Wall 2.0 Reacts to Gestures with Movement

University of Southern California student, Behnaz Farahi, has designed the 'Breathing Wall 2.0,' a kinetic wall that responds to physical gestures. The installation explores the potential of sensory technologies that have emerged in the wake of smart phones.

Of the installation, which was created for the iMAPpening student exhibition at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in LA, Farahi explains, "Mobile devices already use techniques based on touch and gesture-based languages --swiping, clicking, dragging and so on – as a natural, intuitive mechanism of control. But can these techniques be used to control entire environments?"

The wall is constructed out of an elasticated spandex fabric screen, which is stretched over a wooden frame concealing several hinged aluminum rods. The rods are connected to a mini processor that feeds information about the user's actions to a motion-sensing controller. The controller then prompts the rod mechanism to shift, producing a pattern of curving contours with each swipe or tap.
