3D-Printed Porcelain Vases

Olivier Van Herpt Designed the Blue and White Series for galerie VIVID

Olivier Van Herpt introduced the Black and White series designed specifically for galerie VIVID and it was showcased at Design Miami/Basel this year. This series of porcelain vases was created using a 3D printing technology with a machine developed by Van Herpt. It has the ability to extrude a hard clay exterior to serve as the vase's body whilst maintaining the structure throughout a printing process. The vases sit at a height of 70 cm and draw tonal inspiration from Holland's famous delftware blue, often used in Chinese porcelain.

The development process includes a series of thin clay layers piling on top of one another using a developed 3D printer. The blue design represents the encounter between the machine and human, as the hue is done by hand on the clay structure before it enters the extruder to be reconstructed by the machine.
