For its inaugural project, architecture Studio Penda designed the 'Blossom Gate,' an entryway for the Chinese flower garden in Xiangyiang, Hubei. The passageway is crafted entirely out of bamboo.
Instead of a mere transitory structure, the architects wished to create an architectural landmark around which visitors could gather. Penda founders Dayong Sun and Chris Precht explain, "As a typology, the main function of a gate is a dividing one, separating the inside from the outside. On the other hand, a gate is also a connecting element, guiding people to a point where the inside and the outside get unified."
Two lengths of bamboo overlap to create the structure's form, mimicking the sweeping form of the blossoming myrtle flower, the featured flower within the garden.
