Smartphone Controlled Vivariums

Biome Flora Terrarium Merges Mobiles and Eco-Life

London-based designer Samuel Wilkinson has merged smartphones and eco systems together in an inspiring design called the Biome Flora Terrarium.

Wilkinson's Biome Flora Terrarium is a form of vivarium, which is an enclosed space used to house living organisms for research and observation purposes. The biggest difference between this terrarium and others is that this relies on smartphones and iPads to control climate, water level and nutrients. The best way to think of it is as a virtual pet, only you're taking care of an actual living thing. The garden has low energy lighting that replicates sunlight and sensors that sync to mobiles. The Biome is designed to incorporate various environments whether it's a desert or tropical one.

The Biome was featured in the Slow Tech – Designs for Digital Downtime exhibition last month.
