Bill Culbert Creates Light-Centered Masterpieces

Bill Culbert is an unconventional artist. He might have started out as a trained painter, but in 1960 he branched out to use a rather unorthodox object to center his creations around.

Because he began to feel the constraints of the paint medium, Bill Culbert decided to embrace "light as an extension beyond the limitations that canvas brought," as Design Milk puts it. Bill Culbert's works of art are far from constrained.

Using all sorts of different lighting from lamps to television and, most notably, fluorescent lights, Bill Culbert re-imagines one of the most basic objects in people's lives. He also shows that light art is something that will be around for years to come.
