Bee Awareness Murals

The Burt's Bees Global Headquarters Features Dynamic Bee Art by Matt Wiley

The Burt's Bees global headquarters in Durham, North Carolina are brought to life with a series of colorful bee art murals. The art pieces are the work of Matt Willey, who founded The Good of the Hive, an initiative with a goal to paint 50,000 honeybees. Symbolically, this number represents the number of bees required for a healthy hive. As well as beautifully adorning the streets, this project serves to remind of the population decline of honeybees.

So far, just about 1,000 honeybees have been painted by Willey across other states like Florida and Seattle.

The Good of the Hive gets its name from an unusual behavior that Willey observed called "altruistic suicide"—when a honeybee feels sick, it will remove itself from the hive permanently to ensure that it does not bring down the rest of the colony with its illness.
