The Barneys New York Campaign Supports Gender Identity Issues

Using transgender models to embrace gender identity issues, the new Barneys New York campaign has almost 20 transgender people posing in the latest fashion looks.

Photographed by Bruce Weber, the Barneys New York campaign sends a message to create awareness of a community that is rarely in the spotlight by making them the models of the latest lookbook dressed in designers like Ann Demeulemeester, Balenciaga, Lanvin and Manolo Blahnik.

The controversial campaign, which not only featured transgender people but also non models, was conceived by Barneys ad manager Dennis Freedman.

"I was exquisitely aware that in the last decade, the L.G.B. communities have made extraordinary advances, and the transgender community has not shared in that progress," says Freedman.

Freedman also made the move of using powerhouse photographer Weber for the photo shoot to send a powerful message and make sure the campaign was a success.
