These Alternative Vegan Wallets are Made from Discarded Banana Fibers

In place of using leather as the main material for the wallet it creates, the Green Banana Paper Co. from Kosrae, Micronesia uses discarded banana fibers instead.

Beyond just creating a new type of product for consumers, the Green Banana Paper Co. succeeds in making goods that are cruelty-free, repurposing waste and providing jobs for locals on the island. The water-resistant wallets are created in a process that involves boiling the banana fibers to extract cellulose so that it can be ground into a pulp, which is then shaped and screen-printed.

Alongside a range of synthetic vegan fabrics, many new "leather" products are being created from unusual sources like pineapple fibers, mushrooms and even kombucha. What all of these items have in common is that they provide a more sustainable way to make textiles from food waste.
