Carved Cubic Concrete Homes

'AZ House' is Inspired by Chinese Puzzle Boxes

'AZ House', a family home on Lebanon's Mediterranean coast, has a rich collection of inspirations. The cubic, concrete home has carved out slats that are designed to look like the notches in a Chinese puzzle box, and, taken as a whole, the building's facades are all similar in appearance to a Mondrian painting.

From the exterior, one would be excused for thinking that the home is inwardly focused. It's monolithic, concrete cubism doesn't immediately suggest that it also offers up a panorama. However, the slats carved into the building are expressly designed to give the best view possible of the sea visible to the south. Further, the home's ground floor is entirely open, with a glass wall surrounding it 270 degrees to give a wide vista.
