Illusive Horizon Photography

'Axiom' Introduces Color to the Desert

In her latest series, 'Axiom,' photographer Viviane Sassen plays with light, color and reflection to create a graphic art appeal.

Perhaps the most ingenious aspect of the series is the way that Sassen layers each element. The horizon appears to be layered over the sky, while the perspex -- a solid, transparent plastic material -- is placed over the horizon. To conclude, the reflection lies over the perspex. This discovery comes upon closer inspection; upon first glance, the viewer is merely intoxicated by the rich detail and juxtaposition in each image.

The premise might be simple -- some colored plastic sheets and a long stretch of desert -- but it's Sassen's careful execution that makes 'Axiom' truly illusive.
