French illustrator Atelier Sento created these beautiful Oriental prints using the traditional Japanese printing press called a baren. The baren printing press features a paper pad covered in cloth and bamboo leaves that is pressed into an ink wood cut out to create shapes and stencils.
Atelier Sento’s darkly colorful prints depict olden day city life in the streets of Japan. Sento’s use of the baren printing press limited him to layering the image’s colors in separate sheets, which added a beautiful stencil-like quality to the prints. Sento’s use of geometric shapes and patterns to encapsulate the traditional Japanese wardrobes, architecture and city lines is striking.
