Amaro dell’Etna Draws Flavor Inspiration From Its Mt. Etna Distillery

Amaro is traditional Italian liqueur that is creeping its way into America thanks to spirits such as Amaro dell’Etna. This Sicilian digestif has been produced near Mt. Etna in Italy for more than 100 years, but is only seeing an American distribution now. The distillation near Mt. Etna allows the distillers to include several flavorings that exist only in that region. The spirit is crafted with over 26 native herbs and aromatic plants found in the area, and the company even claims that the volcanic nature of Sicilian soil contributes to the unique flavor.

Like most amaro's, Amaro dell’Etna is quite aromatic. The nose offers up heavy notes of cinnamon and cloves that find a wonderful balance with the slightly minty and moderately bitter nose. The palate introduces notes of vanilla, cocoa powder and orange peel, all of which layer upon one another and lead to a moderately bitter finish. These flavors are quite unique to Amaro dell’Etna, but the underlying flavors still echo the classic tastes of Amaro.
