Alexander Wang Introduces ‘T-Shirt Dressing'

Normal guys mean normal hoodies, normal tanks, and normal tees. While often in fashion this obvious linear line of thinking gets lost, Alexander Wang aims to bring it back.

After his successful basics line for men, T-Collection (which was, not surprisingly, mainly t-shirts), the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner will release his first full men's collection in Spring 2010. To give us a taste, he made a video.

In black and white, with no trace of imagery or scenery save for a basketball court and chain link fence, Wang reveals a collection of comfortable, easily washed, worn-in clothes, including a casual zip-up hooded sweater, a basic white tank top, and a classic button-up shirt. Standard boy’s clothing.

Where’s the fashion? Unlike other designers who have launched menswear collections – Matthew Williamson, Gareth Pugh, Christophe Decarnin – Wang has chosen to eschew all flamboyancy and fashionable elements. Gone are the bright scarves, printed shorts, sci-fi warrior jackets, and candy-colored pants. Even the standard blazer and torn jeans have been nixed.

"That’s such an old-fashioned way of how guys dressed," says Wang. "This is T-shirt dressing. You wear your shirt, you’re done."

Well said, Wang. I’m rejoicing and I’m not even a man.
