The Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles recently welcomed works from Dominican-American artist JonOne and his collection 'A Beautiful Madness.'
Growing up in Harlem in the 80s inspired JonOne to create his colorful pieces. "The craziness of the 80s," as he calls it, meant traps like drugs and violence. Out of these dangers came graffiti and he was inspired by the tagged subway cars which he describes as "this moving movement of color" on his site.
Running until December 2nd, the gallery showcases his intricately vibrant color style and street art sensibilities. However, despite such sensibilities, JonOne resists a label for his art. He points out in the video that when you say "graffiti" to some it could mean "the guy that painted on my truck." And when you say "street art" it doesn't exactly fit either because he doesn't paint in the street.
