Solar Tribal Homes

Chhattisgarh’s power utility CSPDCL piloted a new welfare model that combines government housing support with rooftop solar systems for Pahadi Korwa families, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group. Eight PM Janman Awas homes in the remote village of Gudurumuda were fitted with 1-kW solar plants, effectively pairing durable housing with near-zero electricity costs. The project’s core differentiator is the formal convergence of multiple national schemes to reach some of India’s most remote and underserved households.

Each installation cost about ₹60,000, with roughly ₹45,000 covered through central and state rooftop solar subsidies and the remaining ₹15,000 drawn from District Mineral Foundation (DMF) funds, which are supported by mining revenues. By stitching together PM Janman Awas, PM Suryaghar, and DMF resources, CSPDCL created a structure where beneficiaries receive both a concrete home and a reliable, grid-connected solar power source. The pilot focused on grid-challenged terrain where incomes are irregular and traditional power bills pose a heavy burden.

For consumers, this model demonstrates how decentralized clean energy can directly improve household economics, health, and resilience in hard-to-reach communities. Eliminating recurring electricity payments frees up cash for essentials like food, schooling, and medical needs, while stable access to power reduces reliance on diesel and kerosene. As Chhattisgarh expands this approach to more tribal villages, the initiative signals a broader trend toward integrated, subsidy-backed solar housing that delivers long-term security rather than one-off infrastructure support.
