Megumi Igarashi Arrested for Selling Digital Downloads of Private Parts

An artist was recently arrested for letting people create 3D-printed vagina models. The catch? She let them use her vagina as a starting point for the unorthodox creations. Although the project resulted in some very interesting and, arguably, tame creations, it also fell under Japan's strict anti-obscenity laws that "tend to be genital-phobic," according to Fast Co Design.

Thus Megumi Igarashi was arrested. But before the police got to her, participants had already created a vagina lampshade, vagina kayak, vagina smartphone cases, vagina dioramas, vagina toys and more. Fast Co Design writes, "Igarashi argues that these models are not obscene, and that she did not accept money for them. Police disagree, saying that Igarashi has raised ¥1 million, or approximately $10,000, from digital downloads of her vagina."
