The popular photograph editor Adobe recently added an application that will allow users to transform selfies into a 3D portrait. Thanks to diligent research by Menglei Chai -- a PhD student from Zhejiang University -- and a team of Adobe Research scientists, the software will soon be available for consumer purchase.
While this software exists on a small scale in the Adobe Photoshop program, the new tool uses a tech under development that will recognize facial elements such as eyes and mouths. The entire process will now take less than three minutes to complete and will create a personalized 3D portrait from a simple 2D image.
Essentially, the new feature has the ability to recognize faces and specific characteristics and make them lifelike. By eliminating the tedious steps that are needed to create 3D images, this tool will simplify the entire process for artists and designers.
