Finnish Astrophotographer J-P Metsavainio Turns Nebulas into 3D Images

Even though nebula photography produces some of the most striking images in the galaxy, the flat 2D images don't do justice to a 3D nebula. Until now.

Thanks to Finnish astrophotographer J-P Metsavainio, nebulae just got a lot more visually impressive. In this gallery featured on Wired.com, through a combination of animated GIFs and YouTube clips, we can finally see the colorful space formations as the 3D nebula images they always were. The intoxicating effect was accomplished by taking a few pictures of real nebulae, analysing neighboring star positions, and running the findings through 3D rendering software. Metsavainio cautions that these 3D nebula images are not necessarily 100 percent accurate visual representations, and that he used a certain measure of of artistic license in creating the images.
