A small fishing town in Iceland is taking a more creative approach to ensuring the roads remain safe, with the implementation of 3D crosswalk imagery, that forces drivers to pay attention.
The painted roadways create optical illusions that appear as though the lines are hovering above the road. The aim of this project is to encourage drivers to hit the brakes once they've spotted the floating crosswalk. The low-tech roadway addition took a couple weeks to be put into action, but currently has support from both municipal officials and the police force and is displaying positive results.
Iceland is not the first to implement 3D crosswalk imagery as a means of attaining a driver's attention, as similar images exist in Vancouver, and throughout China and India.
