Zebra’s RFID Tags Capture NFL Indoor and Outdoor Data

Zebra’s 'RFID Tags' are at the core of the National Football League’s player tracking system, providing accurate, real-time data on athlete performance both indoors and outdoors. Through the Zebra MotionWorks™ solution, part of Zebra’s location technology suite, the NFL is able to monitor player movements and vital statistics to within six inches of accuracy.

The system operates as an 'Active RFID Real-Time Location System' (RTLS): Each player wears two tags embedded under their shoulder pads, which emit unique electromagnetic frequencies. These signals are collected by receivers positioned around the stadium, enabling the system to triangulate each athlete’s exact location. The data is then processed by advanced algorithms and transmitted instantly to data hubs for analysis.

The results are delivered as 'Next Gen Stats,' offering insights such as speed, acceleration, velocity, route running, and fitness indicators. This technology is deployed across all 32 NFL teams and in 31 stadiums, making it an integral tool for performance optimization and enhanced fan engagement.
