Wage Gap Alarm Clocks

The 79% Work Clock Highlights the Issue of Income Inequality

As part of its Look Different campaign, MTV recently teamed up with the creative agency PARTY NYC to create a device called the '79% Work Clock,' which raises awareness about income inequality. As it stands right now, American women working full-time only receive about 79% of what men receive. This clock highlights the wage gap in a clever way that forces consumers to think about how one's gender and race influences the amount they are paid.

The 79% Work Clock works by ringing after 79% of the work day is done. For white women working 9 AM to 5 PM, this means that the clock will ring at 3:20 PM. To show the even greater wage gap for women of color, the clock will go off at 1:24 PM for Hispanic or Latina women and 1:48 PM for African American women. Consumers can even input their own work schedule to see exactly when 79% of their work day is done.

The 79% Work Clock ultimately puts wage gap statistics into tangible data in order to show consumers just how big the issue of income inequality really is.
