German designer Elisa Strozyk's latest project is her most audacious yet, as it involves the use wooden fabrics to create completely unique-looking menswear. Storzyk teamed up with Icelandic menswear designer Sruli Recht to create two clothing items, a 'cropped militia jacket' and a 'loose sweater.' Both pieces of clothing are made by attaching walnut wood on a wool base, creating a wood-textile blend that has a completely unique look and fit.
The wooden fabric clothing makes light of conventional clothing design wisdom that assumes that large materials -- like huge clumps of cotton or long sticks of bamboo -- need to be broken into very tiny pieces before they can be forged into clothing materials. The clothes created by Strozyk and Recht boldly embrace large structural components, as seen in their liberal use of large chunks of material.
The use of large wood-embossed chunks causes the clothes to wrinkly geometrically, creating a very different tactile experience for the wearer. The wooden surfaces reflect light, producing a look that is at once organic as well as digital.
