Towering Wood Buildings

The Tall Wood Building Will Be Home to University Students

The Tall Wood Building is a planned structure that has a very simple and basic name but is quite an architectural feat. The building will serve as a student residence for students at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Conceived by Acton Ostry Architects, this building will have enough space for 401 students and will be 18 floors high, making it comfortably the tallest wooden residential tower in the world.

This building is built around a gigantic timber 'superstructure' and a solid concrete base. Cross-laminated timber panels are used for extra structural stability. While fire safety is often a concern with wooden towers, the Tall Wood Building douses such concerns thanks to its use of concrete reinforcement and automatic sprinklers.

The Tall Wood Building is rethinking student residences, making use of vertical room to house students in growing universities.
