Water purity issues are affecting many parts of the world but are particularly prominent in India where a reported 70% of water is contaminated due to untreated wastewater discharge, which is something the 'Indus' water-cleaning wall aims to change.
The creation is the design work of Shneel Malik as part of the Bio-Integrated Design Lab at the Bartless School of Architecture and consists of leak-inspired tiles that are filled with algae. The single-celled organisms trap pollutants and prevent wastewater from carrying harmful pollutants into the environment.
The 'Indus' water-cleaning wall is crafted from clay tiles that can be used over and over with only the algae needing to be replenished every so often. Although developed for the India market, the wall identifies what could be done globally to fight against water contamination with natural materials and practices.
