Wang Xiaojiu Creates Hair Art Out of Salon Clippings

Wang Xiaojiu is an artist who works with a unique medium. Film and photography aren't tactile enough and oil or watercolors are too passé. Instead, Wang Xiaojiu, a hairdresser in Jilin, China, creates portraits out of the hair clippings that get swept up every day at his salon.

Though the hair Wang uses is uniformly black, using just a credit card and some of the hairbrushes that are on hand at the store, he is able to create the subtle shading and sharp lines necessary for accurate portraiture. Thus far, his subjects have been primarily fictional, including comic book heroes like Ironman and Wolverine and the Chinese mythical figure of the Monkey God. However, Wang Xiaojiu has also done a portrait of late marshal artist and actor Bruce Lee.
