Mass Retailer Health Labels

Walmart 'Great For You' Icon Informs You of Smarter Food Choices

An increasing number of grocery stores and retailers are using special health labels to inform shoppers on which food choices are better for them, and now the Walmart 'Great For You' labels join the crusade. The new initiative, part of Walmart's larger campaign to make healthier food more accessible and affordable to consumers, introduces a green 'Great For You' sticker on Walmart's own 'Great Value' and 'Marketside' brands of food products as well as the store's fresh vegetables and fruits.

Walmart hopes that this new label will help its customers, who are busy and have tighter budgets, quickly identify healthier foods and make smarter food choices. According to the company, products that get the Walmart 'Great For You' sticker must meet specific nutrition criteria "informed by the latest nutrition science and authoritative guidance from the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Institute of Medicine (IOM)."
