Tree-Monitoring Art Installations

'Voice of Nature' Explores the Effects of Pollution on Trees

Created by Dutch environmental artist Thijs Biersteker, 'Voice of Nature' is a new art installation based on a single tree in Chengdu, China. For the installation, the tree will be laden with sensors, connected to the roots, leaves, and branches of the tree. These sensors will collect 1,600 data points, including CO2 levels, temperature, moisture in the soil, and light level. This data will then be fed into an algorithm that will generate digital rings on a large screen behind the tree.

The rings presented on the 'Voice of Nature' are meant to document the health of the tree in real time. When the rings are far apart and closer to a perfect circle, this indicates the tree is healthy and growing rapidly. However, during days with heavy pollution, the rings will become distorted and crammed together.
