The virtual room key will be convenient for those who do not want to wait in line to check in and get their room key. Using the app, you are able to check in and set up your payment method. The app would then become your room key. Starwood’s CEO Frits van Paasschen told The Wall Street Journal that he believes this virtual room key will "become the new standard for how people will want to enter a hotel."
Your smartphone works as the key using Bluetooth. The Bluetooth connects to a sensor on the door, which will unlock it. The locks are battery powered so they will still work even in a power outage.
