Feminist Video Game Hacks

This Clever Retelling of Zelda is Long Overdue

Since being released in 1986, Japanese designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka's Legend of Zelda has become one of Nintendo's most important game franchises, but thanks to the creativity of YouTuber Kenna W's videogame hack, we're finally getting a feminist look at this important series.

The plot of the Zelda games has traditionally revolved around a Hylian teen named Link undergoing a mission in order to save the kidnapped princess Zelda. But professional animator Kenna W decided it was time to change things up a bit and skillfully modified a Legend of Zelda ROM, giving us the opportunity to play as the usually helpless Zelda.

Zelda's character has only ever been known to assist or indirectly aid Link in his efforts to set her free, so Kenna's modification is not only an interesting feminine alternative for players, but literally a game changing move as well.
