The 'Very Slow Movie Player,' or VSMP, is the design work of Bryan Boyer and works to transform the experience of watching a film into a year-long event. Powered by a Raspberry Pi mini PC, the frame has been designed to "celebrate slowness" and slows down films to let them be enjoyed in a different manner.
The frame has been programmed to display films at a rate of one frame for about 2.5 minutes, which makes the cinematic experience into a lengthy one that isn't intended to be watched but instead glanced at occasionally. This means that a film such as Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, which runs for two hours and 17 minutes takes almost a year to fully play out.
Explaining the 'Very Slow Movie Player,' Boyer said, "A film watched at 1/3,600th of the original speed is not a very slow movie, it’s a hazy timepiece. A Very Slow Movie Player (VSMP) doesn’t tell you the time; it helps you see yourself against the smear of time."
