Digitized Venetian Libraries

The Venice Time Machine Project Will Digitize 1,000 Years of Archives

The Venice Time Machine project aims to digitize the vast archives of the Italian city of Venice, widely regarded as one of the prettiest cities in the world.

The archives of the city of Venice include over 80 km of shelving containing over a 1,000 years of administrative documents. Many of the documents are very fragile and were hand-written in a variety of languages over a long period of time. These documents include birth and death registries, tax statements, maps, peace treaties and more.

It even includes a hand-written request by Galileo requesting financial support from the Venetian state for a telescope he was building.

The Venice Time Machine aims to digitize these documents and create an online bank that people can browse from anywhere around the world.
