The archives of the city of Venice include over 80 km of shelving containing over a 1,000 years of administrative documents. Many of the documents are very fragile and were hand-written in a variety of languages over a long period of time. These documents include birth and death registries, tax statements, maps, peace treaties and more.
It even includes a hand-written request by Galileo requesting financial support from the Venetian state for a telescope he was building.
