Vanessa Paxton's Snapshots Depict Dancers in Mid-Air

Photographer Vanessa Paxton is a Toronto-based artist. Paxton has assembled a series of dainty images under the title of Ballerina which depict none other than the talented genre of dance.

Paxton's images of the dancers come across as floating. The black backdrops are often laced with white bubbles, making her subjects appear to be submerged. These ethereal qualities are furthered by the gazes of the models who often look out into the distance or at the ground, revealing little about their characters.

According to Paxton, dichotomies lie central to her work as the project is a, "photographic exploration into the simultaneous freedom and solitude of the dancer." This juxtaposition is at once apparent in the dark color scheme and flowing apparel.
